Container-based structures designer SG Blocks has joined forces with Grimshaw for the construction of pre-fabricated modular-based education facilities.
The partnership to construct these facilities has been necessitated by the impact of Covid-19 on the education sector, from schools to colleges.
It will see the development of scalable and customisable education facilities that are rapidly deployable for use as classrooms.
The facilities will be developed in such a way that they can be used for teaching, workshops, dining, recreation, sports and other educational purposes.
The housing units designed by the team will allow for the quarantine of community members infected with Covid-19.
SG Blocks chairman and CEO Paul Galvin said: “Using SG Blocks’ pre-fabricated modular structures and Grimshaw’s unparalleled designs, we intend to construct state-of-the-art education facilities that can be easily deployed and scaled depending on market demand.
“In the Covid-19 era, these considerations are especially critical.”
Furthermore, the companies will combine their delivery and supply chains in the fulfilment of orders.
In June 2018, SG Blocks signed an agreement with Grimshaw for an exclusive container-based modular design.
As part of this, Grimshaw agreed to serve as SG Blocks’ design partner and incorporate its container-based structures into its global industrial design portfolio.
Grimshaw chairman Andrew Whalley said: “The global demand for flexible modular educational facilities is significant. Our expandable approach provides decision makers safe options to house, educate and protect the vulnerable.”
The company operates worldwide and has offices in London, Paris, New York, Los Angeles, Dubai, Melbourne and Sydney.
