Under the first phase, 50 two-bedroom family units for student family housing and a multipurpose community centre at the new University Village are ready.
Another 20 two-bedroom townhomes are scheduled to be completed soon, while remaining 80 two-bedroom units will be ready next year.
Being developed by Axium Infrastructure, the $73.8m University Village student family housing project will be owned and operated by UMass.
The University Village, being built at the former North Village Apartments site, will also feature a soccer field, play structures and walkways.
On the other hand, works at the Massachusetts Avenue to build 623-bed upper-level undergraduate apartment-style housing and 201-bed graduate student apartment-style housing are expected to be completed next year.
Once ready, the $200m project will increase the number of on-campus undergraduate bed capacity to over 14,700. It will be built and managed by Axium.
According to the university, the project “will expand on-campus living opportunities for students in an extremely tight local housing market.”
The project, which will replace the Lincoln Apartments, will offer better graduate housing options to the student community.
Additionally, the varsity will provide 10,000ft2 of space for dining, wellness and social activities that will be open for all UMass students.
While Suffolk Construction is serving as the project’s construction manager, DiMella Shaffer is the architect.
At present, UMass Amherst’s campus houses 52 residence halls with nearly 14,000 undergraduate beds.
