West Midlands Combined Authority has appointed British engineering and construction company VolkerFitzpatrick for the new £56m Birmingham University Station.
As part of the upgrade project, VolkerFitzpatrick will be responsible for delivering the detailed design and build of the new station.

The station building, which will feature wider platforms, lifts, a ticket office, provision for a retail unit and canopy coverage along the platforms, is set to provide a modern gateway onto the University of Birmingham’s Edgbaston campus.
It will also feature a direct connection with the University of Birmingham campus through a new pedestrian canal bridge.
VolkerFitzpatrick operations director Mike Evans said: “Our design aim is to ensure the new station can continue to manage an increase in current capacity, but also create a vibrant, positive impression for those visiting Birmingham for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, and those using the station on a daily basis, helping to provide the local community with a faster, safer and more efficient mode of transport for the region.”
Furthermore, under the project, the existing station building will be retained as a passenger exit from the station.

West Midlands Mayor Andy Street said: “This is just one part of our wider investment in rail, which includes the reopening of new lines in Birmingham and the Black Country, station upgrades and the introduction of new rolling stock on some of our busier lines.”
Construction on the new station is set to begin next year.
Since opening in 1978, the station has witnessed a more than 700% rise in passenger numbers.
