Global architectural and interior design practice Warren and Mahoney has announced the opening of the retail and hospitality precinct at Commercial Bay, Auckland, New Zealand, to the public.

Commercial Bay, which has been designed by Warren and Mahoney in association with Woods Bagot and NH Architecture, brings together the retail, workplace, food and fashion sectors in one location.

Warren and Mahoney principal and Commercial Bay lead architect said: “Very few projects unlock as many transformative opportunities as Commercial Bay.

“It’s easy to talk about architecture as an object, but when you look at what we have achieved here, it’s not about creating an individual, stand-alone building, but rather the creation of new public lanes, the reinvention of existing streets and the framing of new public spaces.”

The companies have designed the precinct around one central principle that it should offer authentic experiences to Auckland.

The Commercial Bay precinct, which draws inspiration from the urban regeneration projects in Melbourne, London, and Munich, is intentionally urban and textured.

It responds to the global shift toward mixed-use development comprising transport, workplace, retail and entertainment uses and supports the extension of the city centre experience to include the night-time and weekend economy.

Commercial Bay features 18,000m² of retail space with the intention of creating a new type of experience based around a series of open, public lanes.

The precinct’s architecture was inspired by Auckland’s natural landscape and incorporates forms, materials, planting, and patterns that reference the headlands of the Waitemata Harbour.

The team at Warren and Mahoney led the design of Commercial Bay from masterplan to the opening.
