UK-based Westridge Construction has been chosen for the refurbishment work on the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre.

The Brighton Dome renovation project was suspended in July after R Durtnell & Sons entered a corporate voluntary arrangement with creditors.

The company has been selected as the preferred interim contractor to continue the revamp work on the historic Grade I and Grade II listed buildings. It will soon enter pre-contract discussions.

Westridge Construction managing director Martin Buckthorpe said: “It is a pleasure to have been chosen as the preferred contractor to continue work on this prestigious building, reinforcing our positive ongoing relationship with Brighton & Hove City Council.”

“The Brighton Dome Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre project retains Westridge’s presence in the city centre, following the successful completion of the Hannington Lane development earlier this year. Brighton’s historic landmarks play a key role in the local community and we are honoured to be playing our part in their on-going restoration.”

Westridge will now start work related to weatherproofing and drainage.

The refurbishments are part of Brighton’s Royal Pavilion Estate reaffirm project.

The Brighton Dome redevelopment will involve improving venue access for visitors, staff and performers with a public elevator, and better access arrangements for disabled people.

It also includes the installation of hearing assistance systems and a new artistic space for rehearsals, workshops and meetings.

Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival chief executive Andrew Comben said: “We are grateful to Brighton & Hove City Council for their commitment and swift action on procuring an interim contractor. Westridge has an impressive track record of working on heritage building projects such as Ditchling Museum and Battle Abbey.”

“We are delighted they are a local company and together with project architects Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, we look forward to collaborating with their team on progressing the project.”
