Residential development and property support business Willmott Dixon has secured a contract to refurbish a building known as the old gymnasium at the UK’s University of Birmingham.

Last month the company had won two projects worth £15m at the university to create ‘The Green Heart’ and a new Research Data Centre at Edgbaston Campus.

As part of the latest £7m contract, the building will be refurbished to create a lecture theatre and new teaching and office areas, as well as transitional space for other departments.

“These projects are fantastic for the Midlands, positioning it as a world leader in education.”

Willmott Dixon Midlands managing director Peter Owen said: “We are delighted to secure our third project for the University of Birmingham, adding to its transformational campus redevelopment.

The old gymnasium was built in the 1940s and a portion of it will remain in use as a gym. It has offices on the first and second floors.

The university originally planned to demolish the gym as part of its estate renewal works. However, it will now be retained and refurbished, and see the addition of a two-storey extension on top of the gym area.

Willmott Dixon will partner with Associated Architects to complete the modernisation work by next September.

The company is currently building the new Town House for Kingston University and the Sibson building for the University of Kent, as well as modernising the Dreadnought Building for Greenwich University.
