Construction of Polar Park at the Worcester construction site, the future home of the Worcester Red Sox baseball team in Massachusetts, the US, is set to recommence this week.

This move comes about as the city prepares for the resumption of construction projects for the first time since they were put on hold last month due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Polar Park construction site was closed in the beginning of last month as part of a shutdown ordered by Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker.

At that time, local officials said that a slowdown in construction would not affect the opening in April 2021, reported Ballpark Digest.

However, the surge in Covid-19 cases has delayed the resumption of Polar Park construction for a further week than was originally planned.

The City of Worcester, the Worcester Red Sox, Skanska, and Gilbane-Hunt, which are working to restart Polar Park construction, will assess any impact with regard to the construction delay and the implementation of safety protocols on the project’s cost and timeline.

Worcester Red Sox chairman Larry Lucchino was quoted by Ballpark Digest as saying: “While we look forward to resuming the construction of Worcester’s new ballpark, we recognise that precautions, health, and safety remain paramount.

“We will support our local construction workers, and we will abide by the conditions set forth by our leaders to ensure an environment that complies with their public policy and expert medical recommendations. We will save an assessment of the delay and the adverse impacts for another day.”

Designed by D’Agostino Izzo Quirk Architects, in conjunction with ballpark designer Janet Marie Smith, the new, multi-purpose stadium will be built on a vacant area of land in Worcester’s Canal District.

It will have the capacity to accommodate nearly 10,000 fans when officially opened.

Red Sox executives, and officials from the state of Massachusetts and the city of Worcester, joined representatives from Gilbane-Hunt and members of the community to celebrate the ceremonial ground-breaking of Polar Park in July last year.
