Spanish engineering consultancy Fabre & Torras Arquitectes will design a new AED150m ($41m) central bus station at the Etihad (Union) Square in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.

The 19,000m² development, to be built in four phases, will feature banks, shopping centres, and exchange and travel agencies.

The whole venture and design of the station will be based on the latest updates of the traffic study by Aircon.

Construction work is expected to begin by mid-2011 and completed by 2013.

Operations are set to begin in mid-2014.

The bus station has a capacity to accomodate 80 vehicles and is expected to provide shuttle service to 17 million passengers in the first year of operation.
