MUMA Unveils Design Plans for UK Art Gallery Extension

McInnes Usher McKnight Architects (MUMA) has unveiled plans for the construction of a £12m ($18.6m) extension for the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, England.

MUMA secured the project after beating four other design practices including Edward Cullinan Architects, Amanda Levete, Hatworth Tompkins and Stanton Williams.

The design competition was conducted by the Royal Institute of British Architects.

Plans for the site include two new wings with a landscape gallery and a new informal cafe with a new promenade wrapping around the existing galleries.

Plans also call for a new entrance that will connect the gallery more directly with Whitworth Park.

The practice has also submitted a planning application has been submitted to Manchester City Council.
