HGA Architects and Engineers is to design the new $58m Student Success Center at East Los Angeles College (ELAC) in California, US.

Pinner Construction will serve as the general contractor for the project, which was the part of a design-build competition.

Spanning 12,077m², the building separates the faculty offices from classrooms in two distinct wings, with an open-air, five-storey courtyard connecting the wings.

Consolidating nine departments, the new centre also incorporates sustainable strategies to achieve Net Zero Energy and Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold targets.

Sustainable highlights include natural ventilation, high-performance glazing, solar shading, a high-albedo roof, an energy-recovery wheel and water-efficient landscaping.

The building is slated for completion in mid 2014, according to Westside Today.com.
