Plans for the £25m ($40.5m) refurbishment of Blackpool Tower in Blackpool, UK, have been submitted for public consultation.

Blackpool Council and venue operator Merlin Entertainments are behind the two-phase programme to improve the Grade 1-listed building, which was acquired from Trevor Hemmings' Leisure Parcs last year along with the Winter Gardens.

Residents will be given the chance to see plans for the transformation of Blackpool Tower and to let the Council and Merlin Entertainments know what they think.

The first phase will involve open and free access to the refurbished main areas and reopening of the observation deck, dubbed the Blackpool Tower Eye, at the top of the Tower.

The second phase will restore the ballroom and circus, and add new shopping and restaurant facilities.

The designs are on display at the Council's Customer First Centre detailing the work that is already under way to restore the building.

Funding for the redevelopment has come from the North West Development Agency, European Regional Development Programme, and the Homes & Communities Agency.
