The Detroit Regional Convention Facility Authority (DRFCA) has revealed plans for a $221m renovation of the Cobo Conference and Exhibition Center in Detroit, US.

Plans for the renovation include the reinvention of the Cobo Arena as a 3,716m² ballroom with supporting meeting, pre-function and back-of-house spaces.

A signature space in the form of a three-storey glass atrium linking the main floor of the venue with a new entrance will be created as part of the expansion.

A high-tech media mesh that will function as a giant digital signboard will also be added to the Cobo Center.

Most of the exterior walls along the river will be replaced by high-efficiency glass walls.

Work will begin immediately with construction planned around existing commitments at the centre to not disrupt any costumer events or access.

Full completion is scheduled for December 2014.
