The University of California, Berkeley, has begun work on the $321m renovation and seismic refit of the California Memorial Stadium.

The seismic retrofit will involve the construction of a new facility inside the walls of the existing structure.

The new facility will include two sections of free-floating surface rupture blocks that can move independently without crumbling in the event of an earthquake.

The expansion project will see the addition of a new press box, wider concourses, three new club levels, additional restrooms, concessions and expanded seating in the stadium.

Webcor Builders is the general contractor for the project, which is scheduled to be completed in mid 2012.
