The San Antonio City Council in Texas, US, has approved plans for the renovation of the old municipal auditorium into the Tobin Center for Performing Arts.

The centre is slated to have a performance hall with 1,761 seats and 27 boxes.

The design includes a metal rooftop veil that will rise 65.5m above ground, and shield uneven edges and mechanical structures on the roof.

The project will be funded by $100m from a voter-approved visitor tax and up to $54m in private funds.

Demolition of a part of the old municipal building is planned to begin in May 2011.

The Tobin Center for Performing Arts is scheduled to open in September 2013.
