The University of Massachusetts Lowell (UMass Lowell) has begun construction work on the $40m health and social sciences building.
Designed by Cambridge Seven Associates, the scheme is being managed by the Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM).
The 6,411m² academic building will feature classrooms, faculty offices, specialised labs, simulated hospital rooms and other healthcare settings, and social sciences research space.
The new building will also feature a conference space and a four-storey atrium lobby promoting faculty-student interaction.
Sustainable design features such as energy-efficient climate control, use of natural light to reduce electricity consumption and water-efficient landscaping will be incorporated in the facility.
Gilbane Building Company is the general contractor for the development.
Construction work on the project is due to complete in 2013.
Funding for the project was secured through the Commonwealth’s Higher Education Bond Bill of 2008.
