A team lead by Danish architectural firm BIG has won an international design competition to design a cultural complex in the Albanian capital Tirana.

The team includes BIG, Martha Schwartz Landscape, Buro Happold, Speirs & Major, Lutzenberger & Lutzenberger, and Global Cultural Asset Management.

The 27,000m² cultural complex will include a mosque, an Islamic centre and a museum of religious harmony.

The mosque will have the capacity to accommodate 1,000 people for daily prayers and has been designed to allow light wherever possible.

BIG’s bid beat out five competitors, including Andreas Perea Ortega, Architecture Studio and Dutch SeARCH.
