Netherlands-based design firm MVRDV have won the international design competition for the China Comic and Animation Museum (CCAM) in Hangzhou, China.

The museum's design, which takes the form of connected speech balloons, and has an area of 32,000m².

The lobby, an education area, three theatres and a comic book library are each housed in their own "balloon".

The permanent collections in the museum are showcased in a chronological spiral while the temporary exhibition hall offers complete flexibility.

If two balloons touch in the interior, a large opening allows access and views between the volumes.

The museum's façade is covered in a cartoon relief referring to a Chinese vase.

The single colour white façade is a functional element intended to allow the projection of images on to the balloons.
