Philadelphia University has announced plans for a new $20m building that will house the College of Design, Engineering and Commerce.

The facility will include collaborative design studios, classrooms, workshops, research space, a computer design lab and a prototype fabrication shop.

The structure will be clad in a perforated metal screen that will allow views of the outside while reducing the amount of heat flowing into the building.

The building's design features include removable walls and wide-open spaces with the overall design being conducive to manipulation.

Plans also include a double height forum that will be used to host informal gatherings and planned events.

The new college building will also include a green roof and is expected to secure LEED Silver certification.

Groundbreaking for the new project is scheduled for 10 June 2011 with completion slated for late 2013.
