The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (RWCMD) will open its new £22.5m facility in Cardiff, UK, on 23 June 2011, designed by UK-based architectural firm BFLS.
The building contains a distinctive drum on the north side of the facility with timber and stone finishes and cedar wood slats creating a rippling effect.
The performance spaces are conceived as separate buildings, with the drama building forming a new façade and a recital hall placed amongst the woods adjacent to the existing building.
The disparate elements of the buildings are unified by a single, floating roof.
Inside, the building features four sound-proofed practice rooms with semi-sprung floors, and changing and backstage areas.
The building is expected to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating owing to sustainable features including a green roof, natural ventilation, and ground source heating and cooling.
