The Stavros Niarchos Foundation and Renzo Piano Building Workshop have unveiled final architectural plans for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre (SNFCC), planned to be built in Athens, Greece.

SNFCC will include the 170,000m² Stavros Niarchos Park, a headquarters building for the National Library of Greece and a new opera house for the Greek National Opera.

The park will comprise 85% of the area of the cultural centre and will grade into a 32m-high hill, which will be topped by a glass-walled reading room.

Below the park, two buildings will be packed into one fluid, glass-walled structure sculpted to include an Agora – a combination of a gathering place and a portal to the National Library and the Greek National Opera.

The project will contain several sustainable features, including the park that will act as a greenroof, a canal that will provide anti-flooding protection and a solar energy canopy that will reduce building emissions and meet energy needs.

The €566m project is expected to achieve LEED Gold or Platinum certification.

Work on the centre is expected to be completed by 2015.
