PCL Constructors Canada have won the $358.5m first phase of a construction management contract, from Public Works and Government Services Canada, to restore the West Block on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Canada.
The contract will include a complete restoration of the building’s stone masonry and replacement of its outdated and failing building systems, including mechanical, electrical and safety systems.
The project also includes the construction of a major new infill structure in the building’s existing courtyard, with added space both above and below ground that will increase the West Block’s area by around 50%.
The reconstruction will ensure restoration of structural integrity as well as upgrade the seismic capabilities.
The building will meet modern building codes for earthquake protection, environmental standards and accessibility.
The reconstruction is expected to be completed in 2017.
