East Ayrshire Council in Scotland has launched a plan to regenerate a historic opera house at the centre of Kilmarnock, which was gutted by fire in 1989.
Klin Group will turn the former opera house into an office building for East Ayrshire Council and restore the surrounding Victorian streets.
The opera house project is part of a £21m regeneration programme that will provide 26,500ft² of new office space.
The opera house scheme represents the second phase of Klin’s Encore project and follows the creation of the Barclay House heritage centre and 62 serviced apartments in nearby West Langlands Street.
The third phase, which will include independent shops, commercial incubator units for new businesses and services offices, is scheduled to begin in 2012.
When the opera house renovation is complete in September 2012, the offices will be bought by the council, which will relocate 350 employees there.
The completion of the project will mark the final stage in the creation of a town centre campus housing 800 council staff.
