Brookhaven National Laboratory, operated by the US Department of Energy, has chosen UW Marx Construction Company to renovate 89,000ft² of lab and office space in the chemistry building and the physics building on the 5,300-acre campus in New York, US.

The $50.8m renovation project is slated to begin construction by 1 October 2011.

The renovation scheme involves updating a three-story laboratory and office wing, refurbishing a seminar room, and constructing high-quality clean rooms.

UW Marx will install air-handling systems which will be more reliable and energy-efficient with improved temperature and humidity control in both buildings.

Energy efficiency is expected to improve in the approximately 26,000ft² of space that will be renovated.

The buildings are expected to meet the standards for a LEED Silver certification for commercial interiors.
