Los Angeles City Council in the US has signed an agreement with Anschutz Entertainment Group to build a National Football League stadium near the Staples Center and the city’s convention centre.

Under the agreement, Anschutz Entertainment Group will demolish half of the city’s convention centre and two parking garages to build a 72,000-seat stadium at the Los Angeles Live complex.

The proposed project will cost $1.2bn, which will be privately financed, while $195m public funding plus another $80m from the project developer will be used to remodel the Los Angeles Convention Center to make room for the new stadium.

AEG has selected architecture firm Populous to design the remodelled convention centre and the stadium is expected to be ready ahead of the 2016 football season.
