The American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) and Alcoa’s Kawneer Company have launched an architectural competition inviting students of architecture and design to create a stadium, arena or civic centre.

The 2011 competition is encouraging entrants to learn about building materials, specifically architectural aluminium building products and systems.

The main objective for the competition is building knowledge about materials, products and techniques that can help earn LEED certification points while creating a fun and exciting atmosphere for sports viewing.

Participants must select a city and outdoor sport, and create an environmentally friendly facility.

In addition, students will be tasked to design a space that is resilient in all forms of weather, including the hurricanes and tropical storms of the Gulf, while seating a minimum of 25,000.
