Colby College Museum of Art in Maine, US, plans to begin construction on the $15m Alfond-Lunder Pavilion in October.

The building has been designed by Frederick Fisher and Partners.

The 26,000ft² expansion project, which will include 10,000ft² of new exhibition space, will include a sculpture terrace and a classroom for museum education and outreach.

Art department studios will occupy the top floor of the extension.

The new building will open during Colby’s bicentennial year of 2013, with the opening exhibition launching in July 2013.
