Central St Martins College of Art and Design in London is to open a £1.8m innovation in mid May. Sitting on the site of a former car park at its Southampton Row campus, the centre is an extension of the Design Lab and will be called Central St Martins Innovation.

Designed by architect and Design Lab director Brent Richards, the centre is made up of four workshops, a movement studio, gallery and conference space for 80 people.

Central St Martins College of Art and Design plans to move to a site overlooking the Regent's Canal in London's King's Cross in 2010. A single, purpose-built, state-of-the-art site, encompassing new and listed buildings, would be designed to replace the numerous St Martins campuses across London. The 27ha development to be completed by summer 2010.
