The 1,614ft wedge-shaped tower, with a rectangular hole at the very top, will eventually house 70 floors of office space accommodating 12,000 people, with a hotel, restaurants and an observatory, according to the Associated Press.
Built by Japanese builder and designer Minoru Mori, the $1bn project is due for completion in time for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
