A ground-breaking ceremony for David Chipperfield's The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery in the north of England is to be held this Friday.

The Hepworth Wakefield promises to become one of Yorkshire's key architectural draws.

It will house a new art gallery featuring a collection of Barbara Hepworth's sculptures and other work, while acting as a design hub for the region with space for community events and family activities.

It has been designed to blend in with surrounding small-scale industrial buildings using a series of trapezoidal-shaped blocks.

The interior features a range of different sized rooms which work in unison with the pieces planned for display.

A performance space, educational workshop areas and public facilities are all housed on the ground level of the building.

The gallery is part of an overall waterfront regeneration scheme and is planned to be open to the public in early 2010.
