Denmark-based architectural firm 3XN has been prequalified to develop a multi-purpose public area in Vienna, Austria.

The design firm is among 24 candidates who have been invited to participate in a two-stage, international competition alongside Coop Himmelblau in Vienna and architectural firm Snøhetta, among others.

The competition intends to transform a site in central Vienna into an urban environment with a large, multi-purpose open area accessible to the general public.

The site features three Vienna institutions, including the Vienna Concert Hall, the Hotel InterContinental and the Vienna Skating Club’s skating rink.

The competition site covers around 15,400m² and is located at a central location between the Stadtpark (City Park) and Karlsplatz at the margin of the area listed as the World Heritage site of "Vienna’s Inner City".

The winners of the competition are expected to be selected shortly, after which work will start on the project.
