As the UAE construction market matures, more contracts are being awarded to design-and-build groups that can design a project and see it through to completion, a senior industry member told Emirates Business.

The market has shown other signs of maturity with mergers between major developers and contractors saving cost and time for the development of a project, the local news service reported.

UAE Contractors Association official Imad Al Jamal cited the projects at Al Raha Beach that were awarded as design-and-build contracts to illustrate the turning of a new leaf by the industry.

Similar to build-operate-transfer (BOT) contracts, consortiums of the developer, consultant and contractor have emerged winning various infrastructure contracts.

Other examples include the tendering of sewage treatment plants in Abu Dhabi and Saudi Arabia as design-and-build projects.
