Australia Honours its National Portrait Gallery

Australia's National Portrait Gallery has been honoured by the Australian Institute of Architects with two design awards.

The gallery was awarded the 2009 Canberra Medallion and the Romaldo Giurgola Award for Public Architecture.

The $87m gallery was designed by Sydney-based architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker.

All award winners are now in the running for National Architecture Awards, to be announced in Melbourne at the end of October.
