The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) has shortlisted architects to extend the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester, UK.

The shortlisted architects include Zaha Hadid, Stirling Prize-winner Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios, Eric Parry Architects, Amanda Levete Architects, and the team of Carmody Groake and Stephenson Bell.

The first stage of the project is to overhaul the Grade-II listed gallery and build an addition to the south-west side overlooking Whitworth Park.

After an interview by a jury panel, five firms will be asked to submit plans before September 2009.
The winning proposal will be announced in November as part of the first stage of a Heritage Lottery Fund bid.
