UK practice Ardmore has won the first tier-one contract on the £1bn 2012 Athletes' Village, beating practices Galliford Try and Wates.

Five of the 11 plots will be built by the Olympic Village developer Lend Lease and the sixth by Ardmore, while the remaining projects will be spread across three shortlisted contracts.

15 firms, including Galliford Try, North Midland Construction, Byrne Group, Carillion Building, Morgan Ashurst, Brookfield Europe and Bennett Construction will be submitting tenders for some or all of the three remaining contracts.

All the three contracts are expected to be awarded by the Olympic Delivery Authority, London, by the end of 2009.

All 11 buildings will be converted into residential apartments, after the Games are over.
