Melbourne's John Wardle Architects and Boston's Office dA have been selected to design a new school of architecture building for Australia's Melbourne University.

The new faculty of architecture, building and planning will feature lecture theatres, dedicated spaces for research into sustainable precinct design and performance along with a library, exhibition areas and specialist workshop spaces.

Architects were asked to address four key issues such as built pedagogy, academic environment, design studio and the living building.

Melbourne University dean of the faculty of architecture, building and planning Professor Tom Kvan said the winning design showed a strong understanding of educational, environmental and social issues.

The competition was funded by the Australian Institute of Architects.
