A 60m tower in Saudi Arabia has been inaugurated at the site of the university it will symbolise.

The Breakwater Beacon, at the site of the new $7bn, 16-million-square-metre King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), was designed by Australian studio UAP. The univeristy campus was designed by HOK.

The tower's amorphous hexagonal sections have been made from pre-cast concrete blocks, and rise up out of the sea into an elliptical spire.

The interior includes an amphitheatre and reflection pond for communal gatherings.
