The Stockholm Library extension, designed by German architect Heike Hanada, has been scrapped by the local council.

Heike Hanada was awarded the £60m extension contract after winning a design competition two years ago.

Stockholm City Council has scrapped the project citing funding difficulties and reservations from the heritage bodies that were opposed to changing the landmark structure.

The Stockholm Library was originally designed by Swedish architect Gunnar Asplund.
