A planning application for the redevelopment of the New Street station in Birmingham has been submitted to the local council. Consent for outline planning for the £600m scheme was granted in 2007.

Phase one of the project involves the construction of a concourse in the former car park. The concourse will be enclosed by a large atrium.

Preparatory site clearance work for the project began in September 2009, and the concourse is expected to open in 2012.

Phase two will involve closure of the existing concourse for redevelopment, which is expected to be completed in 2015.
