Harvard University in the US has stalled the extension of its proposed science centre in Allston, designed by German-based Behnisch Architekten, citing economic downturn as the reason.

The $1bn centre was the first centrepiece building of campus expansion plan which featured four to five million square feet of new facilities including academic spaces, student housing, and museum and performance spaces.

The campus master plan is drawn by Cooper Robertson & Partners, Frank Gehry and the Olin Partnership.

The university plans to complete the foundations of the science centre by 2010, and to wait for the growth in economic climate.
