Samoo Architects and Engineers will redesign the Garak Market in Seoul, Korea.

The Korean practice won a design competition with their proposal to redevelop the market square sited in an area of 543,451m².

The project was the first public wholesale market in Korea and has been criticised for its traffic congestion and inefficient logistics system, which the proposal aims to tackle.

The proposal will create two distinctive zones – wholesale and retail, the market's roof will be converted to a giant park for recreational, sports and cultural activities.

Space-efficient, multitasking facilities equipped with a total control centre will be constructed and centres for packaging, processing, storaging and delivering will be expanded.

A sophisticated cold chain, food hygiene and safety system will be established to achieve modernised facilities for logistics and distribution.
