Foster + Partners has unveiled the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, the first building to be constructed in the carbon-neutral Masdar City, Abu Dhabi.

Masdar City is a pedestrian-friendly scheme built on a 7m-high concrete podium to allow space for the network of personal rapid transit (PRT) vehicles.

The initial arrival station and the one at the Masdar institute are almost complete.

The vehicles are stationed in dedicated glass boxes so passengers can walk directly into the building through stairs into the complex above.

The scheme's Islamic motif façade is designed by French designer Jean Marc Castera and houses the teaching spaces are surrounded by residential blocks for students.

The building has narrow streets to disallow exposure to direct sun.
