A ground-breaking ceremony has been held for the proposed expansion of the St Louis Art Museum in Missouri, US.

The $130m expansion project was designed by David Chipperfield Architects.

The scheme will add 200,000ft² of museum space, enhanced galleries and public space, a car park to accommodate 300 vehicles, and a new fully accessible entrance on Fine Arts Drive on the east and south of the original museum building.

The addition will be in dark polished concrete and be fitted with skylights and floor to ceiling windows.

The practice will also rework the original museum building, which was originally designed by Cass Gilbert.

The museum is expected to remain open throughout its two-year construction.
