There is a significant rise in the demand for skilled architects in Australia for the first time since 2008, according to a new report by the Clarius Group.

The Clarius Skills Index report reflects demand across 20 skilled occupations including the building and engineering sector which received the highest quarterly rise in demand.

The index is greater than 100 during tight market conditions when skilled labour is difficult to find. At times when architects are easier to find in a loose labour market, the index is less than 100.

The architectural labour market received a rating of 100.5.

Recruitment has targeted senior and more experienced staff while architectural graduates continue to struggle to find new opportunities.

The report says that the ongoing issue for the building and engineering industry is that it is apparent that skilled migration will not satisfy Australia's long-term needs.
