A competition for architects, engineers and students to design a new crossing over the River Severn in the UK has been launched.

The Linking the Lands contest was initiated by the Royal Society of Architects in Wales and the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Teams of architects and engineers will be judged by construction professionals, chaired by Martin Knight of Knight Architects and Mark Way, director of skills at the Construction Industry Council.

Entries will be divided into three categories. Part I will include architectural students and engineering students up to 4th-year undergraduate.

Part II will involve architectural and engineering graduates, and Part III will include chartered and incorporated members in the architecture and engineering disciplines.

Shortlisted entries will be announced in May 2010 and the winner will be unveiled in June during the Cardiff exhibition, where their designs will be showcased.
