The renovated headquarters of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maryland, US, has achieved the LEED-NC Gold certification award for energy saving.

The 102,000ft² four-storey building, and a new security pavilion and landscaped entry forecourt have all undergone renovation.

Reduced use of raw materials, restoration of the brick and limestone exterior, use of low volatile organic compound materials and use of insulated low-E steel units connected to HVAC system have been incorporated into the sustainable designs.

The buildings also use solar reflectance index roofs to mitigate heat islands.
