David Chipperfield has been selected to design a new auditorium and renovate the original Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre in Russia.

The project was commissioned by the Perm Region and will be completed in 2014, according to the company.

Situated in the Komsomolsky Park, the building is also known as the Tchaikovsky Theatre.

The new design will add a 1,100-seat theatre, rehearsal spaces and a foyer with restaurant and retail space.

The project will also include refurbishment of the old theatre, which was built in 1878 and extended in 1959.

David Chipperfield beat UK-based practices Avery Associates Architects and PLP Architecture, Danish practice Henning Larsen Architects, Netherlands-based Neutelings Riedijk Architects and Sergey SkuratovArchitects from Russia to win the project.
