The main tender competition for Abu Dhabi’s Louvre Museum, located on the $27bn Saadiyat Island, has been launched.
Contracts for the dome, and mechanical and electrical work have already been awarded, with the remaining tendering processes closing in June.
French architect Jean Nouvel has been commissioned to design the floating dome of the Louvre building.
Up to 20 companies have been shortlisted for the construction of the museum, which is expected to open in September 2013.
Saadiyat Island will also house a museum styled on New York’s Guggenheim, bidding for the main contract of which will begin in 2011.
Lord Norman Foster designed the third museum for the island. A tender for its construction will be launched in July 2010.
The island will also house a performing arts centre designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, according to Reuters.
