Legendary architecture firm Grad Associates, which helped sculpt the New York City skyline, has closed down.

The architectural firm, which had survived 104 years, suffered a collapse in business due to the recession and was forced to close its Newark offices.

Its achievements include the 40-storey art-deco Essex House Hotel, the Raymond Commerce Building – at one point New Jersey's highest building – and the US Department of Defense's Forrestal Building complex in Washington DC.

Grad Associates also left its mark on Newark, designing the Martin Luther King Jr Federal Courthouse and the Symphony Hall.
