Foster + Partners is to redesign the master plan for the £15bn ($22.3bn) carbon-neutral Masdar City in Abu Dhabi.

Owing to current market conditions, Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company has reviewed the development strategy.

The practice is reconsidering the land uses in phase one or the project – low-rise residential blocks will replace villas and 10,000m² larger commercial plots will be built.

The LAVA Architects-designed Masdar City Centre will proceed unchanged. UAE company Aldar has been appointed lead developer for the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, designed by Foster + Partners.

Plans for the city-wide automated pod transport system will also be scrapped, according to architectsjournal.co.uk.

Masdar will announce the names of eight new design firms to be involved in the project in April.
