A LEED Gold certificate from the US Green Building Council has been awarded to Rackspace Hosting's corporate headquarters in the US.

As part of a community redevelopment programme Rackspace converted a vacant 1.2 million square foot shopping mall into a green building through its greenspace initiative.

During the first two phases of construction over 230,000ft² was renovated for use and further space will be utilised for expansion when work begins on phase three.

The renovation has been guided by sustainable practices such as sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality.

During the demolition phase steel, concrete and other metals had been recycled while recovered building materials were given to a non-profit organisation.

The company made use of design materials with low volatile organic compounds, natural lighting through skylights and controlled lighting fixtures, thereby reducing energy consumption by 15%.

The external landscaping is designed to be drought resistant and the irrigation system uses only recycled water.
